introducing…the 29 day comic project

DAY1

I briefly discussed this for the first time last week, but basically I have this insane idea that I should take the month of February and put together a comic – in 29 days (so one page a day) and by the end of the month I’ll have a 28-page story plus a cover. What’s the reason for this? Well if you haven’t noticed, it’s taken forever to get Chapter 1 and THE JUMPER out and I feel like it would do me some good to have to work faster. Plus I like the idea of having a bunch more pages online for people to dig through.

[As a side note, I know that if you were to work on a monthly comic you'd probably be doing a page a day, but I'm not working on a monthly comic. This is a hobby and don't forget that I spend my days in thelandofGraphic Design. So turning out a page a day is going to be a pretty intense schedule.]

I also really like the idea of experimenting with what I’m posting. If you take a look through the archive you’ll notice that I’m trying out a bunch of different ways of not only telling a story, but how I post the stories as well. For the main ON THE VERGE story I’ve posted full pages on a weekly basis while THE JUMPER has been only panels. I’ve also tried prose with images and even just prose. The only way to find out what works, is to experiment. Maybe posting a full batch of pages daily will be more effective and get a better response than what I’ve done so far. I’m not sure, so I’m going to keep trying stuff out and hopefully I can narrow down what people like the best.

What’s the plan for the project?
The plan for this project is to start the month with absolutely nothing done outside of a vague plot (and when I say vague, I’m dead serious! It’s pretty vague and I’m not even sure who of the main characters it will feature). Each day I have to create a new page of artwork as well as the story and dialogue to go with that page. Other than that, on the first of February (today), I have to sit down and figure out where the story is going. I’m pretty sure that I’m just going to wing it for the first couple of days as I try to figure out exactly where the story is going to go, but I’ll have to nail down the overall plot pretty quickly. Heck, I don’t even have a title yet…

Where can I see the progress?
I’ll tweet a picture of the days artwork and post updates of my progress here on the blog when I get a chance. This will probably take over for any kind of tutorials or behind the scenes type posts that I try to post every month, but I really want to focus on this project for the next little bit.

When are you going to post the actual pages?
Well, if all goes according to plan, the complete book will be done by the end of February. Starting March 1, I’ll post one page a day for the whole month – or at least 29 days. Crazy? Probably. But if you’re looking for constant stories and new work, ON THE VERGE is the place to be.

What about THE JUMPER?
I guess that’s the best thing for you, the reader. THE JUMPER will continue on the normal schedule – so new stuff will be posted every Tuesday until the story is complete. That means that on Tuesdays in March there will be two postings for two different stories. That may get complicated, but I’m sure it will work and you guys will be able to follow along.

And that’s it! It’s February, so I guess I better sit down and get that first page drawn out and write some dialogue… See it later on Twitter and follow me so you can get constant updates!
