the Punisher commission
As part of the ANDREW JACKSON IN SPACE Kickstarter that ran last year to support the development of the first issue, I did several commissioned illustrations which I’ve been meaning to post. I asked what people wanted for their commission and said I’d draw whatever they had in mind…
Like most of the commissions that I’ve done recently, when I got asked to draw the Punisher, I had to admit that I didn’t know too much about him. Back when I was a kid and read a lot of comics, I read the Punisher and loved it – but that was something like 20 years ago. Anyway, I was up for the challenge, so I agreed to give it a shot. After lots of doodling and trying to work out just how to draw the Punisher without drawing lots of killing, I settled him looking kind of bad ass, with smoke and wreckage and warzone in the background. In my head, I wanted something really graphic – almost Sin City like.
The commission was also a prime opportunity to make a bit of a mess with some ink and ink washes and splatter and just have fun with it. Below are some of my preliminary doodles and a work-in-progress shot of the ink washes.
