#makecomics – introducing the Butterman
Hey everyone! I wanted to post a quick #makecomics post and introduce you to the Butterman. Just what the heck does that mean? Well, you’ll have to keep checking in and wait until the finished story is posted. For now, here a quick process series of pictures as I work through the cover design.
First up are doodles. I had a basic idea of the Butterman coming up behind Lucas but wasn’t quite sure how to make that work per se. Anyway, I’m always conscious of reading left-to-right, so that’s kind of where I started…
Lately I’ve been doing what I call “roughs” directly on a tablet. I’m finding that it is definitely speeding up the process – especially when you start working and realize that what you’ve got down isn’t quite working… this is from one of my doodles, but it just didn’t translate and felt really empty (and not very exciting for a cover).
Here’s my second attempt. I basically ditched the first one and went back to one of my early doodles that had Lucas kind of “sneaking” around. Then I added in the Butterman’s big arms because it just sort of needed it. At this point, I was pretty happy with things, so it’s on to pencils!
This is pretty much where I’m at right now. Penciling has really become all about focusing on getting the drawing right and worrying about rendering and other details later. I’m still working pretty loosely at this point and you can see all the underlying drawing and anatomy that will never show up in the finished piece!
I’ve got to figure out the rendering before I jump into inks, but so far so good.
And that’s it for now. Stay tuned for more #lunchtimedrawing coming your way tomorrow…
